Lash Extension Aftercare: 10 Tips to Make Your Set Last Longer

Simple, realistic aftercare habits that keep your lash extensions full and beautiful between fills, from a Montebello lash artist.

You invested in a beautiful set of lash extensions. Now let's make sure they last. Great aftercare is the difference between a set that still looks lush at week three and one that's patchy by week one. The good news: none of it is complicated.

Here are the ten habits I recommend to every client at the studio in Montebello.

1. Keep them dry for the first 24 hours

The adhesive needs a full day to cure completely. Skip washing your face over the sink, steamy showers, saunas, and sweaty workouts for the first 24 hours after your appointment.

2. Wash your lashes (yes, really)

One of the biggest myths in lash care is that you shouldn't wash extensions at all. The opposite is true! Clean lashes retain better. Use an oil-free lash cleanser a few times a week to gently remove makeup, dust, and natural oils that break down adhesive.

3. Ditch oil-based products near your eyes

Oil is the enemy of lash adhesive. Check your makeup remover, moisturizer, and eye creams. Anything oil-based that migrates into your lash line will loosen extensions early. Look for the words "oil-free" on anything that touches the eye area.

4. Brush them every morning

A clean spoolie and five seconds each morning keeps your set fluffy and untangled. Brush gently along the top of the lashes, not from the root.

5. Sleep on your back or side

Sleeping face-down grinds your lashes into the pillow all night. If you're a stomach sleeper, a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and helps your set survive.

6. Skip the mascara

You don't need it. That's the whole point of extensions! Mascara (especially waterproof) coats extensions in product that's nearly impossible to fully clean off, which shortens the life of your set.

7. Don't pick, pull, or twist

Extensions shed naturally with your lash cycle. Pulling at a loose one can take your natural lash with it. If something feels off or twisted, text the studio. A quick fix at your fill is always better than DIY.

8. Avoid lash curlers

Mechanical curlers can break both the extension and your natural lash. Your curl was already designed into your set, so you don't need to add more.

9. Watch the heat

High direct heat from opening a hot oven, blow dryers on high, or even lighting a grill can singe and relax the curl of synthetic lashes. Keep your face clear of direct heat sources.

10. Book your fills on schedule

Fills every 2–3 weeks keep your set full as your natural lashes shed and regrow. Waiting too long usually means a full new set instead of a quick fill.

The bottom line

Lash extension aftercare comes down to three things: keep them clean, keep them dry-ish, and keep your hands off. Do that, and your set will reward you with weeks of wake-up-ready lashes.
