Lash Lift vs. Lash Extensions: Which Is Right for You?
An honest comparison of lash lifts and lash extensions: cost of upkeep, maintenance, results, and lifestyle fit, from a Montebello lash studio.
It's the question I hear most often from new clients at the studio: "Should I get a lash lift or extensions?" Both give you beautiful, wake-up-ready eyes, but they suit very different lifestyles. Here's the honest breakdown I give every client in my chair.
What each treatment actually does
A lash lift works with what you already have. A gentle setting solution curls your natural lashes upward from the root, opening up your eyes and making lashes look longer, like a perfect mascara curl that lasts for weeks. Add a tint and you may not reach for mascara at all.
Lash extensions add to what you have. Individual synthetic fibers are attached to each natural lash, letting you choose your length, volume, and drama, from a soft natural set to full glam.
Maintenance: the biggest difference
Lash lift: almost zero. After the first 24 hours, you live your life normally. The lift relaxes gradually over 6–8 weeks, and you simply book another when you're ready.
Extensions: commitment. Your set needs a fill every 2–3 weeks, oil-free products around the eyes, and gentle handling. Most clients find the routine easy, but it is a routine.
The look
Lash lift: enhanced-you. Even a dramatic lift still reads as your own lashes. If your natural lashes are short or sparse, the change will be nice but subtle.
Extensions: designed-you. Because we're adding lashes, we control the outcome completely: length, curl, density, and shape can be mapped to your eyes. This is the option for a visible transformation.
Time in the chair
A lash lift takes about 45–60 minutes. A full extension set takes 1.5–2.5 hours, with fills around an hour. Either way, you're lying down with your eyes closed, and most clients call it the most relaxing part of their month.
Which should you choose?
Choose a lash lift if you:
- Want the lowest possible maintenance
- Swim, sweat, or travel often
- Have decent natural lash length already
- Prefer a natural, "born with it" look
Choose extensions if you:
- Want noticeably longer, fuller lashes
- Love a defined, done-up look every day
- Don't mind fills every few weeks
- Have sparse or fine natural lashes you'd like to amplify
